올해 ‘Australian Book Industry Awards’(ABIA)의 최고 주인공이 된 작가 제시카 타운센드(Jessica Townsend)씨. 올해 33세인 그녀는 10세 전후(대략 7-13세) 어린이 대상 소설 <Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow>로 ‘Gold ABIA for Book of the Year’을 비롯해 3개 부문을 수상했다.

호주 작가 및 출판인들의 최대 잔치인 2018 호주 출판산업상(Australian Book Industry Awards. ABIA)에서 올해 최고 주인공으로 33세의 신진 작가 제시카 타운센드(Jessica Townsend)가 선정됐다.

지난주 목요일(3일) 시드니 International Convention Centre에서 열린 올해 ABIA 시상식에서 타운센드는 데뷔작인 <Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow>로 ABIA 최고 영광인 ‘Gold ABIA for Book of the Year’뿐 아니라 ‘The Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year’ 및 7-13세의 어린이용 도서를 대상으로 하는 ‘Book of the Year for Younger Children’을 동시에 거머쥐었다.

특히 그녀는 지난 3월 ‘Australian Independent Booksellers Awards’(Indie Book Awards) 수상에 이어 첫 소설로 연이어 최고 영광을 차지한 주인공이 됐다.

타운센드는 ‘Indie Book Awards’ 수상 이후, 지난 달 ABC 방송과의 인터뷰에서 “마치 꿈속에서 살고 있는 것 같은 느낌이 든다. 정말 이상한 한 해를 보내고 있다”는 말로 자신의 벅찬 심경을 밝힌 바 있다.

<Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow>(Hachette Australia 출판)는 타운센드가 10년에 걸쳐 완성한 것으로, ‘Eventide’에서 죽을 것이라는 저주 속에서 자란 한 소녀가 한 낯선 이에게 이끌려 ‘Nevermoor’라고 불리는 마법의 세계로 들어가면서 자신의 운명에서 빠져나올 새로운 기회를 얻게 된다는 줄거리이다. 작가에 따르면 이 책은 10세 전후(대략 7-13세) 어린이 독자를 위해 9권의 시리즈로 구상됐다.

퀸즐랜드 선샤인코스트(Sunshine Coast)에서 자란 타운센드는 4살 때부터 언니를 따라 독서에 빠져들었다. 책읽기에 몰입해 지내던 어린 시절의 자신에 대해 타운센드는 “집에서건 학교에 가는 차 안에서건, 심지어 차에서 내려 길을 걸을 때조차도 책에 코를 박고 다녀 늘 엄마의 걱정을 더하게 만든 아이였다”고 회상했다.

호주 출판산업상(ABIA)은 250명 이상의 출판 관계자로 구성된 아카데미에서 선정하며 선정 작가에 대한 상금은 없지만 수상자의 도서 판매에는 큰 영향을 미치며 독자들에게도 작가로서의 이름을 확고하게 인식시키는 계기가 된다.

출판회사인 ‘Hachette Australia’ 또한 올해 ABIA에서 좋은 결실을 맺었다는 평가이다. 이 회사에서 출간한 호주의 유명 소설가 마이클 로보텀(Michael Robotham)의 심리 스릴러 <The Secrets She Keeps>가 ‘General Fiction Book of the Year’를, 멜번 거주 작가 사라 슈미츠(Sarah Schmidt)의 <See What I Have Done>이 ‘Literary Fiction of the Year’를 차지했다. 슈미츠의 이 작품 또한 그녀의 데뷔작이다.

논픽션 부문 상은 사라 크란스노스타인(Sarah Krasnostein)의 애정 어린 회고록 <Trauma Cleaner: One Woman's Extraordinary Life in Death, Decay & Disaster>(Text Publishing 사 출간)에게 돌아갔다.
