영화 <기생충>, ‘Cannes’ 이어 ‘Academy’ 최고상 ‘영예’

 

연출가 봉준호 감독, 한국 영화 및 ‘아카데미’ 역사에 획기적 기록 남겨

총 6개 부문 후보 중 최고 권위의 작품상-감독상-각본상-국제영화상 차지

 

지난해 5월, 프랑스 칸 영화제(Cannes Film Festival)에서 ‘황금종려상’(Golden Palm)으로 전 세계 영화인의 찬사를 받으며 올해 오스카상에 대한 기대를 불러 일으켰던 봉준호 감독의 작품 <기생충>(Parasite)이 한국 영화 역사에 큰 획을 그었다. 그뿐 아니라 92년간의 오스카 상 역사에도 주요 장면으로 남게 됐다.

지난 9일(일, 호주 동부시간 월요일 오후 12시) 미국 로스앤젤레스 돌비 극장(Dolby Theatre)에서 열린 92회 ‘아카데미 시상식’(Academy Awards)에서 <기생충>은 전 세계 영화계 최고 권위의 ‘작품상’(Best picture)을 차지했으며 봉준호 감독에게 ‘감독상’(Best director), ‘각본상’(Best original screenplay)을 안겼다. 또한 ‘국제영화상’(Best international feature film)까지 차지함으로써 100년이 넘은 한국영화 사상 최대 경사로 기록되게 됐다. 이와 함께 이 영화의 ‘작품상’ 수상은 아카데미 시상식 사상 할리우드 제작이 아닌, 외국어 영화로는 최초라는 것도 세계 영화사상 새로운 기록이다.

봉 감독과 그의 작품 <기생충>이 만든 새 기록은 이 뿐만이 아니다. 지난해 5월 유럽 최고 권위의 칸 영화제에 이어 곧바로 아카데미 시상식에서도 최고 권위의 ‘작품상’을 연이어 수상한 것이 그것이다. 현재까지 같은 작품으로 ‘칸’과 ‘아카데미’를 동시에 거머쥔 사례는 델버트 맨(Delbert Mann) 감독의 로맨틱 코미디 영화 <Marty>가 지난 1955년 칸 영화제 ‘황금종려상’과 1956년 아카데미 ‘작품상’을 차지한 이후 65년 만에 두 번째이다.

 

올해 ‘작품상’ 후보에는 <기생충>을 비롯해 할리우드의 쟁쟁한 감독들의 작품 9편이 후보에 올랐다.

<1917>(Sam Mendes 감독), <The Irishman>(Martin Scorsese 감독), <Ford v Ferrari>(James Mangold 감독), <Jojo Rabbit>(Taika Waititi 감독), <Joker>(Todd Phillips 감독), <Little Women>(Greta Gerwig 감독), <Marriage Story>(Noah Baumbach 감독), <Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood>(Quentin Tarantino 감독) 등 쟁쟁한 작품들을 제치고 <Parasite>가 호명되자 시상식장의 영화인들은 한결같이 공감을 표하는 열렬한 박수로 <기생충>의 작품상 수상을 축하했다.

이날 봉 감독은 시상식 무대에 가장 많이 오른 영화인 중 하나였다. 감독상, 각본상, 국제영화상 수상자로 세 차례 무대에 올라 인사를 전했다. 아시아 출신 영화인이 아카데미 감독상을 수상한 사례로는 지난 2006년 <Brokeback Mountain>, 2013년 <Life of Pi>를 연출한 대만 출신의 이안(Ang Lee) 감독이 있다. 하지만 이안 감독의 작품은 연출자가 아시아 출신일 뿐 할리우드에서 제작된 영화이며, 할리우드가 아닌 외국에서, 외국어로 제작된 영화로 ‘감독상’을 차지한 것은 봉준호 감독이 처음이다.

<기생충>은 올해 아카데미 시상식에서 수상을 차지한 4개 부분 외 ‘미술상’(Best production design)과 ‘편집상’(Best film editing) 후보에 올랐으나 수상을 하지는 못했다.

 

한편 세월호 참사를 다룬 다큐멘터리 <부재의 기억>(In the Absence. 이승준 감독)은 올해 ‘아카데미’에서 ‘단편 다큐멘터리’(Best short documentary) 부문 후보에 올랐으나 수상에는 실패했다. 또 <기생충>과 함께 가장 강력한 ‘작품상’ 후보에 거론됐던 <1917>은 ‘감독상’ 등 10개 부문 후보에 올라, 이 가운데 ‘촬영상’(Best cinematography), ‘시각효과상’(Best visual effects), ‘음향효과상’(Best sound mixing)을 수상했으며, 역시 11개 부문에 노미네이트 됐던 <Joker>는 ‘남우주연상’(Best actor / Joaquin Phoenix), ‘음악상’(Best original score) 2개 부문 수상에 만족해야 했다.

올해 아카데미 ‘주제가 상’(Best original song)은 <Rocketman>에 삽입된 음악 ‘Love Me Again’의 엘튼 존(Elton John)과 버니 토핀(Bernie Taupin)에게 돌아갔다. 엘튼 존은 지난 1995년 장편 애니메이션 영화 <Lion King>의 주제 음악으로도 이 상을 수상한 바 있는데, 15년 만에 다시 오스카 트로피를 받았다. 올해 ‘Academy Awards’ 각 부문 수상자(작품) 및 후보는 다음과 같다.
